AP Exams Available for Katy ISD students

(February 22, 2008) – Katy ISD high school students may register for Advanced Placement (AP) exams in the counselors’ office at their home campus March 3 through12, 2008.

All students who are enrolled in AP courses in Katy ISD are strongly encouraged to participate in AP exams. Students are not required to take the exam, and the exam has no bearing on the high school course grade.

The cost of each AP exam is $54 for eligible students to be paid at registration. The Texas Education Agency pays the remaining $30 of the College Board’s AP exam fee of $84. An eligible student is one who has taken a PEIMS designated AP course in the subject of the test. Ineligible students will be subject to the full test fee of $84.

Students interested in taking the AP Chinese or AP Japanese exams are required to submit their registration to their home campus by March 7. Students registering after March 12, are not guaranteed the availability of their exams and may be subject to a late fee.

A partial refund of $30 per exam is available for seniors who have been admitted to a college and who have documentation that the college will not accept AP exam scores for credit. Refunds must be requested in writing to the school counseling office by May 2, with appropriate documentation.

Students in special economic circumstances or students who need special testing accommodations must see their counselor prior to their exam registration. All requests for additional fee waivers and testing accommodations must be made during the registration period (March 3-12) to ensure proper testing arrangements are made for the student.

AP exams are scheduled for the weeks of May 5, and May 12. To determine the exact date of a particular exam, visit www.collegeboard.com.

Scores of 3, 4 or 5 on AP exams are generally accepted for college credit; however each college or university has its own policy on awarding college credit or advanced standing. Students are responsible for checking the policy at the university or college they plan to attend by contacting the university or by visiting the College Board’s website at www.collegeboard.com.

Contact a high school counselor for more information about the AP program and AP exam registration.
