Katy ISD and AbitibiBowater form Recycling Partnership
(July 10, 2008) – Katy ISD and AbitibiBowater, a producer of newsprint, commercial printing papers, market pulp and wood products, have partnered on a pilot plastic and metal container recycling program at six Katy ISD schools.
The pilot program, which will be evaluated in September, allows the community to recycle plastic containers with recycling numbers one, two, three, five and seven; aluminum and steel cans; and paper products at one location.
“We are pleased to partner with Katy ISD to pilot the plastic and metal container recycling program,” said Dawn Self, AbitibiBowater area sales representative. “We hope the community utilizes this program to recycle their containers and paper instead of throwing them in the garbage.”
AbitibiBowater has placed plastic and metal container recycling bins next to the paper recycling bins at the following schools: Cinco Ranch High School, Cinco Ranch Junior High, Memorial Parkway Junior High, Nottingham Elementary, Seven Lakes High School and West Memorial Elementary.
“Katy ISD Maintenance and Operations Environmental department continually looks for ways to be good stewards of the environment and provide the opportunity for our students and community to participate,” said Peggy Caruso, environmental assistant director for Katy ISD maintenance and operations. “We are extremely excited to be the only Texas school district to pilot this multi-bin recycle program.”
All Katy ISD schools earn money from the paper recycled in their bins and this pilot program could help increase the amount of funds they receive each year. Should the pilot program be successful, the programs could be expanded to other Katy ISD schools as well as other school districts in the Houston area.
