Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Takes Comments on
Newly Proposed GPA Rules

(September 22, 2008)The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s (THECB) Uniform GPA Advisory Committee proposed new rules to establish a standard method to compute a high school student’s grade point average for admission to general academic teaching institutions.

The new proposed rules provide that the GPA calculation will apply to the calculation of such averages for all students who enter the ninth grade for the first time from May 1, 2009, onward.  The grade point averages of students who are in the ninth grade as of April 30, 2009, will continue to be calculated on the same basis before the effective date of the new rules.

Also under the new rules, pre-AP, pre-IB, honors, and technical courses would not receive credit under the proposed rules.  In addition, dual credit courses would be weighted equally as AP and IB courses.

Members of the public who wish to provide comment on the proposed changes can submit them to Natalie Coffey, Senior Program Director, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, P.O. Box 12788, Austin, Texas 78711. Comments will be accepted through October 5.

For more information about the proposed rule changes, visit the THECB Website at http://www.thecb.state.tx.us/reports/pdf/1617.pdf.
