Katy ISD Hosts Pre-AP Orientation

(November 24, 2008)Parents of fifth grade students who will attend a Katy ISD junior high or high school in 2009-2010 are invited to attend a Pre-AP and AP orientation on Monday, December 1, at WoodCreek Junior High, 1801 WoodCreek Bend Lane, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Alene Zimmer, Director of GT and Advanced Academic Studies, and Cathy Wappler, GT and Advanced Academic Studies Program Specialist, will present an overview of the Advanced Placement Program and will address commonly asked questions about student participation in Pre-Advanced Placement courses.

A Pre-AP course of study is designed to prepare students to be successful in Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Advanced Placement courses are generally available to juniors and seniors at each of the Katy ISD high schools and provide students the opportunity to engage in college-level studies with the option of taking an AP exam to possibly qualify for college credit.

Research indicates that students who participate in an Advanced Placement course are more likely to complete an undergraduate program, more likely to choose academically challenging majors in college and more likely to pursue an advanced degree. Katy ISD offers Advanced Placement courses in the following disciplines – English, social studies, science, mathematics, languages other than English, computer science, music and art.
