Safe Drug Free Schools and Communities Hosts Doo Wop to Disco Benefit
Katy ISD Safe Drug Free Schools and Communities (SFDSC) will host Doo Wop to Disco – a benefit gala aimed at raising support and awareness for the program. The two-night event held April 18 and 19, starting at 6 p.m., in the Merrell Center will be packed with family fun including entertainment from local bands, food, face-painting, a cake walk and a talent search hosted by special celebrity guest, Tanya McQueen, from ABC’s popular show Extreme Makeover, Home Edition.
Doo Wop to Disco will kick-off with music from Johnny Dee and the Rocket 88’s and Katy’s own Grateful Geezers on Friday, April 18. The event is themed to music from the 50’s through the 80’s to appeal to all generations. Friday’s event will also feature a silent action, door prizes, food and a photographer. Adult tickets cost $10 and student tickets $5.
“To achieve safe and drug free schools, parents, teachers and community members must all realize their personal responsibilities,” said Nancy Stiles, coordinator of Safe Drug Free Schools and Communities. “It takes great stamina and courage to constantly be alert and aware in regards to achieving safe schools.”
Saturday, April 19, special guest Tanya McQueen will emcee the SDFSC talent search that is available to musicians of all ages in the Houston area as well as a cake walk and face painting. Doo Wop to Disco will conclude with a performance by a Katy area band, Identity Crisis.
“SDFSC programs focus on bully prevention, gang intervention, dangers of prescription drug abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, and constant open communication between parent and child, and providing mentoring through the Student Assistance Program,” explained Stiles. “Through the Doo Wop Event, we hope the Katy community will become more aware of SDFSC programs and the need for supplemental funding for those programs.”
Individuals and groups interested in participating in the talent search are invited to apply by submitting a registration form, available at www.katyisd.org by clicking on the SDFSC logo.
Individuals and area businesses are invited to attend and support this event with their time, talent, attendance, financial contributions and donated items to be used as door prizes and silent auction items. To do so, contact Norma Garza at 281-396-2293.
The purpose of the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Program is to support comprehensive drug use prevention and violence prevention. Specifically the program aims to prevent violence in and around schools; prevent the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs; involve parents and communities; and coordinate with related federal, state and community efforts and resources to foster safe and drug free schools and communities.
SDFSC aims to educate and to positively influence students to make safe and healthy lifestyle decisions and to eliminate behaviors that have negative consequences in their lives and the lives of others. Part of achieving the organizations objectives includes participation with a district task force of 100 students and adults, to identify and meet the needs of all Katy ISD students.
