Katy ISD Holds Follow-up Critical Issues Symposium
Katy ISD recently held part two of its Critical Issues Symposium where returning participants continued the community-wide conversation started in February.
Participants revisited their work from the first symposium through a more in-depth examination of one of five critical issues: student growth and success; safe and orderly working and learning environment; community engagement; effective and efficient operations; and organizational development.
“I am pleased we were able to continue our work from February with more in-depth discussion,” said Alton Frailey, superintendent of schools. “These community-wide conversations are valuable to me because they provide input and guidance as I make recommendations and work with the Board of Trustees.”
Approximately 70 participants focused on both the current and future educational needs and expectations for Katy ISD students, strengths and weaknesses within Katy ISD and explored areas of opportunities and barriers outside of the district.
The evening’s work concluded with an activity in which participants provided instant feedback through the use of electronic voting. The responses generated a summary of the participants’ level of agreement to statements presented by Frailey such as, “I believe that as currently designed, there is a gap between what our educational system can accomplish when compared to what is needed for 21st century learners,” and “For me, the challenge will always be to preserve a community identity that is familiar to residents who have lived and moved here, while also advancing the characteristics of a top quality school district.”

“It is important for me to continue community-wide conversations because ultimately, our success as a district hinges on what we believe—not as individuals—but as a community,” said Frailey. “We must be vigilant about preserving the soul, spirit and sensibilities of this community and bring together the best minds to create the right opportunities and learning experiences for our children.”
