WMJH Students Receive National Kids Care Club Citizenship Award

West Memorial Junior High students were awarded the national 2008 Kids Care Club Citizenship Award for their community service with the “Be an Angel” playground project.

Calling themselves the J-Unit, WMJH students, faculty, and staff have participated in three fundraisers for the playground.  They walked in Carrie’s Heart “Walk ‘n Roll,” attended the BBQ Fundraiser at the VFW park, and held a spare-change drive at the school to purchase bricks for the walkway leading up to the playground.

“We are truly blessed here at WMJH with such awesome kids who really have a desire to give back to their community,” said Jessica Wright, WMJH seventh grade teacher and J-Unit sponsor.

JoLynn Reynolds, Vicki Barrett and Monica Miller are also sponsors of the WMJH J-Unit, which is part of the Kids Care Clubs international organization that exists to encourage children to get involved in their local communities and consists of 1,400 volunteer clubs and about 75,000 children volunteers.  The club at WMJH was founded in January 2008 and has already completed several projects.

The “Be an Angel” playground project is building a barrier-free playground that will allow children who have physical disabilities to play alongside their peers.
