The annual Katy ISD conference for Moms, Dads, mentors and community members is held each fall in the Katy ISD Education Support Complex. The conference offers varied workshops with great presenters, and your registration fee includes breakfast and lunch. Mark your calendar for:

So what's going to be offered at this year's Discover U? How about:

  • Finishing Touches--Back by popular demand, our favorite catering consultant will share some of her secrets for successful entertaining.  Whether you're planning a huge special event or an intimate dinner for two, this presentation will help you with food preparation, recipes, plated foods and table design.  (Martha Hoover, Katy ISD)
  • Love Languages--We'll help you understand the five distinct love languages people use and teach you how to better express your love in a form that others can immediately identify.  You may even discover why you feel and act the way you do!  (Pam Warmack, Members Choice Credit Union and Woman's Teacher at Kingsland Baptist Church)
  • Wildly Successful Parenting--We know you want to be a successful parent.  But if you want to be WILDLY successful, you won't want to miss this wildly entertaining workshop!  (Beth Zarate)
  • Understanding Birth Order--Are you an only child who loves to watch *John & Kate Plus 8?"  A fascinating overview of how birth order helps determine a person's personality.  (Leslie Najm, M.S.S.W.)
  • Self Esteem--It's a big, broad topic.  But we'll give you some tips on how to get your kids felling good about themselves through the ages and stages of growing up.  (Leslie Najm, M.S.S.W.)
  • Internet Safety--Facebook.  MySpace.  Internet predators.  We'll help you weave through the overwhelming maze of keeping your kids safe in, and from, cyberspace.  (Gabe Lu, Zitech)
  • Getting Back Into The Job Market--Whether you've been out for a little while or a long time, an experienced Career Consultant will make re-entry into the job market easier by sharing "best practices" for a job search and practical strategies to market yourself more effectively.
  • Pick and Choose--Have you ever wondered if the fruit, vegetable or meat you're choosing is right for tonight's dinner?  Join us as we teach you how to pick and choose the best fruits, vegetables and meats for your family.  (H-E-B Representative)
  • True Colors--Discover why you act, communicate and feel the way you do.  We'll discuss how different personalities can work together and experience an exciting adventure into your own personality.
  • Party 101: The Consequences of Drinking--A serious workshop about a serious subject that, if you have teenagers, you won't want to miss.  We'll provide information every parent should know before hosting a student party at home.
  • How to Raise Well-Rounded Children So They Can Get off Your Payroll and on with Their Lives--A panel discussion of local and Fortune 500 business professionals will discuss what they look for in new-hires and great employees.  They'll share their hiring philosophies and take your questions.  (Tracy Janda, Center Point Energy; Rusty Wylie, Chick-fil-A; Eric Bruches, ExxonMobil; Rebecca Blackmon, Traditions Bank)

  • What Are Colleges REALLY Looking For?--Anyone who's helped her child trudge through the college application process has asked herself this question.  Join us as we dispel those mysterious collegiate criteria myths.  (Carol Bennetts, Katy ISD)
  • Creating and Nurturing Leadership Skills in Your Children--Two Katy ISD professionals will share their considerable expertise in developing children with character and leadership qualities.  (Nancy Stiles and Alys Shorter, Katy ISD)

The Discover U website allows online registration, and will give more information on the workshops offered.

Cost: 

The Discover U website will include information about registration fees and deadlines.

Location:

All Discover U workshops will be held in the Katy ISD Education Support Complex (ESC) and the Leonard Merrell Center, at 6301 South Stadium Lane, Katy, Texas, 77492.  Parking is available on the west side of the building.
When traveling west from Houston on I-10, take the Pin Oak Road exit onto the feeder. Stay on the feeder road, and turn right at the traffic light onto FM1463. The ESC and Merrell Center will be one block on the left.

Frequently Asked Questions about
Discover U

How do I register for Discover U?   We highly recommend online registration through the Discover U website . The Discover U 2008 website will be open for registration at the start of the 2008 -09 school year.

Can I register by mail? If you are unable to register online, contact Martha Brown, in the PIE office at 281.396.2468 to receive more information, and a registration form in the mail.

Who can attend Discover U?  Discover U is open to all Katy parents, volunteers and community members.

How much does it cost? The registration fee includes continental breakfast, lunch and attendance at any of the sessions scheduled throughout the day. The Discover U website will contain information about the registration fee.

Who do I make the check payable to?  KISD/VIPS.

Where do I send my registration form and check?  Martha Brown, Partners In Education, 6301 South Stadium Lane, Katy, TX, 77492. Remember to write your name on the check.

When is the registration deadline?  The registration deadlines for Discover U 2008 will be announced  later.

Do I have to attend every session?  No, you are free to attend any, or all, of the sessions offered. Some workshops are offered more than once during the day so you won't have to miss out on your favorite presentations. The Early Bird sessions will be offered again later in the day.

Is child care available?  Katy ISD is unable to provide child care for this event.

Does attendance at Discover U count as volunteer hours?  Yes, volunteer-related conferences, meetings and trainings are reportable hours. A volunteer who provides babysitting to allow another volunteer to attend Discover U can also count the time spent babysitting as volunteer hours.

How do I complete an evaluation for Discover U? All registered volunteers and community members who attend Discover U will receive instructions about completing the online workshop evaluation by email.
