Katy ISD volunteers talk about how important volunteering is to them.
"Years ago when I first enrolled my daughters in the Katy ISD schools, I was very nervous. The culture here seemed very different from ours, to make my girls more comfortable I started volunteering.
Through volunteering I have gained confidence, I have made very good friends, my daughters are happier and it helps their self esteem too.
We all come from different backgrounds, but we are not so different."
"I grew up in Katy. My mom, my dad, my grandparents, they were all teachers. I love my parents and they were at every event they could be at, but during the school day there were other moms who volunteered when my parents couldn’t be there. I remember those moms; I want to be that mom for those children in my kid’s class.
Our community is filled with children who need us."
"Last year I taught Junior Achievement to a third grade bilingual class. Their teacher told me her students couldn’t wait for me to visit them each week, but they helped me as much as I helped them. They helped me remember the most important things in life, they made me laugh, pick me up, re-energize me. My wife started to wonder why I was coming home in such a good mood.
Together we can build the community we want for our families."
"I always thought that volunteering was just for moms, no room for dads. I found my niche as a KEYS mentor. I grew up as a latch-key kid; my parents were not very involved in my education. I tried to set a different example for my children and teach them what it means to give back.
To me, volunteering is a privilege, and an honor."
"Teachers and staff work tirelessly to teach my kids in more ways than I could ever teach them myself; I volunteer to support them. Even though I work, it’s important to me to spend a little extra time to help them out, it’s the least I can do.
When parents and teachers work together, our kids get the best of all of us. We are so blessed that Katy ISD understands the importance of parent and community involvement."
