Current Events and News TRY OUT INFORMATION!!!!!!!!!!
(additional informational meeting time offering due to athletic banquet) time: 4:00 - 4:30 room 1163
Dear Parents,
Tryouts for the 2009-2010 BDJH Science Olympiad team will be held in Mr. Lightle’s room (1163) on Thursday, May 21st from 3:00-6:00. There is a set amount of spots open for next years team. This tryout is ONLY FOR OUR CURRENT 6th AND 7th GRADERS (next years 7th and 8th graders).
The students should expect to take a comprehensive general science test, write a mock lab-write up, complete an essay portion of the test, and sign up for a short interview. The students will receive a packet on the day of the tryout that will include information for the students to get two teacher recommendations as well.
If your student is interested in trying out, please send me a brief e-mail indicating their interest. This will help me in planning how many copies to make for this process.
If you would like more information about the Science Olympiad program here at BDJH, please plan to meet in my room for an informational meeting on Tuesday, May 19th from 5:00-6:00. Parents of current BDJH Science Olympians are not required to attend, as we will be covering information that you are already aware of (although you are welcome to sit in).
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at

MORE NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Hello Bears,
The BDJH State Science Olympiad team had a VERY successful outing at the State Competition at Texas A&M University on April 24th and April 25th. Your Bears missed qualifying for the National Tournament in Augusta, Georgia by a mere 3 points! (That is the equivalent to a 1 loss point in basketball, or a field goal in football).
Your Bears finished third, 3 points behind the 2nd place team and 6 points behind the 1st place team.
Here is a breakdown of the events and awards. It is really amazing to think that our 1st place finishes mean we were the best in the entire state in that event! The top four places received medals, and the team won a very nice third place trophy.

New Schedule Below
Notes: Students will have a binder check on Thursday. The students need to have calendars, event related materials and rules in binder. Also, I sent home a letter today asking for a letter of support for science olympiad, to help the Texas Science Olympiad renew it's sponsorship from one of its main sponsors. Please help if you can. Ask your student to see the note I handed out.
Americans consume 26 billion pickles a year. At least 10 of that number was consumed by our science olympiad team.
Practice This Week 3/2/09:

Friday: Building events only

Practice This Week:
New Caney Invitational!
Wow! Thanks to our students and parents for a great competition! BDJH flexed it's cranial muscle and got third and fifth against the top competition offered by the state. We will take this week off to organize our supplies and tubs. Look at our data and analyze our weaknesses, and start preparing for our Regional Competition.
The regional competition is April 4th at Lone Star College at Cy-Fair (behind the Berry Center off of Barker Cypress). This is the last competition that I can bring thirty kids to. After this, I will select our State team which is the 15 kids (plus two alternates) who will compete on our behalf at Texas A&M on April 24th and 25th. We will have to qualify for state by doing well at our regional competition (called the Gulf Coast Regional Science Olympiad Competition).
I again cannot say enough about our parent coaches. We by far had more parents than any other schools, and you guys are absolutely the best. You all coached the kids in the events, helped schedule the kids in their event time slots, transported the kids to and from the site safely, and even ran one of the events so that the eleven eleven teams participating could compete in Scrambler.
Over the course of the year our parents have coached the kids in physics, scrambler, fossils, trajectory, environmental chemistry and sciences, astronomy, geology, time, supplies and schedule management among other things. Our team is successful because of your efforts. Thank you so much.
I will post our results on this website as soon as I get an electronic copy.
NOTE: Our George Observatory Field Trip is scheduled for this FRIDAY. Students took home packets earlier this week with registration forms and important information. Please review those forms ASAP and return them to me along with applicable monies on Monday. Thanks, and I am looking forward to our trip!
11/22/2008: Results from the Cypress Falls Invitational Competition: Beckendorff Team B won the 2nd place Sweepstakes Trophy, and our A team won the 3rd place trophy!!! WAY TO GO BEARS!!!! Our kids won 40 medals! Wow!
NEXT COMPETITION! Based on the student and parent poll results, I have decided to register our two teams to compete at the next invitational contest which is Saturday, February 14th from 7:30-2:30 with awards at 4:30. This competition is at New Caney 6th garde campus in Porter, Texas. Please see the link below for further information. I will again be depending on my AWESOME parents to help run the show. This is a division B only competition, so it should be faster than our last one. This invitational has some of the top state teams attending, and will be a good measuring stick to see where we are at.

12/4/2008: In Mr. Lightle's classroom, the Houston Museum of Health will be presenting a lesson to our Science Olympiad team over cardiovascular anatomy and health, using human artery specimens and a sheep heart. This activity is from 3:30 to approximately 4:30. UPDATE: The Health Museum visit was a great success. Our students received a presentation from a Museum Educator on nutrition and anatomy of the heart and brain! The students got to see a sheep brain and sheep heart dissection, they learned how to calculate BMI, and got to see human arteries and veins! It was a great presentation, and a great way to help prepare our kids for future competitions.
