Hello: This is Mrs. Berger's Home Page

Valentines Party is this Friday at 2:30. Your child is allowed to bring Valentines and treats for their classmates!

SNACKS: Please be sure your child's snack is nutritious and low in processed sugar. We suggest: pretzels, cheese, crackers, raisins, fruit, and veggie sticks. As we will be eating our snacks in the classroom, please do not send "messy" snacks such as pudding, yogurt, or canned fruit. Water bottles are allowed in the classroom as long they have a "sports" top.

Our lunch time will be 11:16

   Home Work:

Monday: spelling workbook page 8

Tuesday: spelling workbook page 9

Please do not do the "editing" portion in the spelling workbook; we complete this at school.

Fourth Six Weeks

Reading: This six weeks, students use knowledge of authors, personal interests, and text difficulty to choose library books. They will be taught to recognize and use parts of books (such as title pages, chapter titles, and glossaries) to locate information. They will also learn to read captions, charts, and graphs to obtain information. Students will compare books, looking for similarities and differences in characters, plots, settings, problems, and solutions.  They will also be determining cause and effect in stories. Especially important, students will be monitoring their own comprehension by rereading and retelling what they have read.  We will continue to work on sight words, though the words will continue to increase in difficulty. This six weeks, students should be reading at a minimum of 60 words per minute on first grade level.  One way to improve fluency is to practice the take home readers each evening until your child is reading about one word each second.

Phonics: In phonics, we will continue to practice instant recall of the phonogram sounds and rules.  We will begin to put more emphasis on locating our multi-letter phonograms in written text.  Assessments will include dictation of individual phonograms and the ability to circle multi-letter phonograms in first-grade level reading material.  Helping your child locate multi-letter phonograms in a page or two of a book while reading at home would be most beneficial!

Spelling:

There will be a few changes this six weeks.  Beginning with unit 13, the spelling words lists will contain 12 words.  Because we are now half way through first grade, students should be able to print letters correctly.  Two points will be deducted for each letter reversal on the tests.  The word lists will focus on words containing the phonograms:  oa, ea, ai, ay, ck, ng, tch, and igh. Many of the words will end with double l or with a silent e.

Language and Writing:

Students will be writing in a variety of forms for a variety of audiences.  We will write letters, lists, invitations, and stories.  There will be an increased emphasis on complete sentences, correct capitalization, and correct punctuation.  Language skills will include using singular and plural forms of nouns, using –er,   -est, and –ing at the end of words, and using alphabetical order to locate words in a glossary.

Math:  We have a busy six weeks ahead of us. During this six weeks, students will learn place value (tens and ones).  They should be able to read, write, and order numbers up to 99 using place value.  Students will use their knowledge of number order to identify points on a number line.  We will be comparing area, volume and mass.  We will learn to use balances.   We will also be learning how to tell time to the hour and half hour.  This unit is often a challenging one.  The students will be learning how to tell time not only on a digital clock but on an analog clock.  We will also be investigating how much time certain things take like brushing your teeth or eating dinner.  The children always enjoy doing the activities to find out how long each thing takes.   The hundredth day of school falls in this six weeks. We will be learning to skip count by 2, 5, and 10 in preparation for counting money.

Science and Health: This six weeks will be exciting in Science.  There will be lots of hands-on activities as we revisit rocks and types of soil.  Students will identify natural resources, such as lakes, oceans, and streams.  They will also learn how to conserve water.

In Health students will learn how to brush their teeth properly.  They will also learn who the people are that can give them health information:  teachers, nurse, parents, etc...

Social Studies:  This six weeks we are studying about patriotism, citizenship and Black History.  U.S. symbols, the pledge to the U.S. flag, and the Star Spangled Banner are all a big part of our patriotism objectives.  We are learning about the eagle, the American flag, Statue of Liberty, and the Liberty Bell and what they mean to us as a country.  We will also increase our vocabulary by learning the big words in the Pledge of Allegiance.

For citizenship we will be learning more about caring and courage, responsibility and honesty.  We will also identify people who exhibit these qualities.

We will learn the role of the president.  We will learn about the contributions of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  We will also learn the characteristics of important leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr., George Washington Carver, and Mary McLeod Bethune.  We will learn about the different ways they have contributed to our country.
