Discipline Policy:
Acceptable behavior is important to a quality-learning environment and is required at Winborn Elementary. Proper discipline will be discussed with the students and expectations will be defined and taught.
Parent Communication of these essential skills will be communicated each week on Wednesday through the DWE expectations folder. Each student will bring their expectations folder home on Wednesdays, and each student is responsible for securing a parent signature and returning the folder to school the following day. The student will receive a mark in their expectations folder for not assuming responsibility if they do not have a parent signature when the student returns to school on the following school day.
0-4 checks in the same category = Satisfactory (S) on the report card
5-7 checks in the same category = Needs Improvement (N) on the report card
8+ checks in the same category = Unsatisfactory (U) on the report card
8 or more scattered checks = N in self discipline
Grade Level consequences for marks in one day on a student’s expectations folder are listed below:
1st offense in one day Verbal warning written in expectations folder
2nd offense in one day Mark written in expectations folder
3rd offense in one day Mark written in expectations folder, along with a
Think Time Form completed in Study Hall with a
parent signature required on form
4th offense in one day Mark written in expectations folder, along with a
parent contacted and after school detention
assigned
5th offense in one day Mark written in expectations folder, along with an
office referral
In order for a student to earn the Principal’s Discipline Award at the end of the year, they must have no more than 3 marks on their expectation sheet for each six weeks.
Teachers will emphasize positive behavior in many ways: verbal praise, notes, stickers, mystery motivators, and tickets that can be redeemed for a prize from a teacher’s treasure box. At DWE, we believe it takes both positive rewards and natural consequences to modify student behavior.
Homework:
Homework is assigned as needed to reinforce or enrich topics covered in class and counts for 10% of the six-week grade. Punctual completion of homework is essential for your child’s classroom success, as without adequate practice it is impossible to perform well on class work.
Homework is due the day after it is assigned unless the teacher specifies otherwise. A mark on the student’s expectations folder is earned if a student fails to bring in a completed homework assignment on the day that it is due. Each day the assignment is not turned in, up to 3 days, the student will receive a mark in their expectation folder. Late homework will be accepted up to 3 days after the initial due date; however, 10 points will be deducted from the grade per day that it is late. After 3 days, the grade for the assignment becomes a zero.
If a student does not complete homework 5 times in a 6 week grading period, they will be assigned an after school detention. Each class can count as a separate missing homework assignment. For example, if a student does not turn in reading, writing, and math homework on a particular day, that is counted as 3 missed homework assignments. Several after school detentions can result in a Saturday detention.
