About Golbow Elementary

Golbow is proud to be celebrating its 20th year of educating Katy youth!  A variety of learning opportunities are available for students. Reading instruction targets all learning styles through phonemic awareness, phonics, and literature development and appreciation.  A solid foundation in mathematical concepts is established through the use of manipulatives, and then further developed as students move from concrete to abstract, applying math concepts to their real-world experiences. A well-balanced science program incorporates hands-on experimentation rooted in the scientific method and AIMS activities (integrated math and science activities, which are thematically organized).

Golbow houses two computer labs, which are used to teach specific technology skills while reinforcing and extending grade-level curriculum, as well as a distance learning lab, which allows students to participate in virtual field trips to sites around the world.  The Learning Resources Center provides the best that children's literature has to offer centered around a pink 60’s-era convertible that’s been restored to serve as a reading area.

During weekly music and art classes, students sing, play instruments, explore art elements and principles, and learn about famous musicians and artists who have influenced our world.  Physical education instruction promotes healthy bodies and minds through a curriculum that covers physical fitness, motor skill development and recreational games.  The school counselor works with individual students, facilitates small group counseling and meets with whole classes frequently to discuss issues of importance to children.  Additional programs designed to ensure academic success include REACH (Reading Empowers All Children) and dyslexia intervention programs for struggling readers. Golbow also offers both before- and after-school Reading, Math and Writing Academies. ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) is provided for students who speak a different language at home. Golbow also offers a wide range of special education services: speech, PPCD (Pre-School Program for Children with Disabilities), inclusion, resource, helping teacher and content master.  There is also a pre-kindergarten program for qualified 4-year-olds.

Parents are actively involved in the school through the Parent-Teacher Association and volunteer program.  The “Golbow Nugget,” a parent newsletter, is distributed every six weeks.  Parents participate in orientation and curriculum nights throughout the year, and  are invited to discuss concerns, ask questions and share ideas at principal’s breakfasts and “Town Hall” meetings. Parents are encouraged to eat lunch with their children, attend special events such as Carnival, book fairs, programs, recognition ceremonies, and much more. They are an essential part of our learning community.
