About Katy Elementary

Katy Elementary is the oldest of KISD’s elementary schools. It sits on the same site as the first one-room schoolhouse built in 1898 to serve the prairie townsite of Katy. The present school, built in 1965, was renovated and enlarged in 1989 and again in 1995 to accommodate the area’s growing population.

Katy Elementary offers students maximum opportunity for extended instruction through before/after-school tutoring and library, before-school homework help, computer lab, P.E. activities and other enrichment activities.  The faculty is committed to schoolwide enrichment; all classroom teachers obtain 30 hours of gifted/talented staff development within three years of employment.  The Math Café and Kid’s Kits enrich and extend classroom instruction for all students. Students who need extra assistance get help from certified teachers through the REACH (Reading Empowers All Children) program, community volunteers in the KEYS (Keep Encouraging Youth to Success) mentoring program and parent tutors. Katy Elementary is very proud of its science lab, which was funded by the PTO.

PTO meetings coincide with other events such as Family Reading Night, Family Fitness Night and Family Art Night.  Evening parent classes offer tips on how parents can be fully involved in their children’s educations; topics include math skills, instructional and test-taking strategies, phonics and research-based strategies for parents to help their children at home. Through the Principal’s Round Table, parents have an opportunity to share views and information with school staff. Campus Advisory Team meetings are open to anyone who wishes to attend.

The principal sends home a weekly communication to all parents containing various information items and a calendar of upcoming events. Information is also shared through weekly phone and e-news messages.
