Welcome to Katy Junior High Library home page

Mrs. Gill,  Librarian

The Mission of the Katy ISD Library Media Centers is to educate all students to successfully access and utilize the information of the twenty-first century empowering them to be proficient life-long learners.

The library at KJH is the center of the school for reading, research and learning.

Every other week reading classes are scheduled for checking out and returning books, but students may come to the library any time during school hours with permission from a teacher.

Classes are scheduled and individuals may come to work on research assignments and projects.  Small groups and individuals meet with their mentors and for tutoring in the library, too.

Library Procedures:

Each reading class participated in the orientation program for the library during the first weeks of school, and students were given a Katy Junior High Library Student Handbook outlining the rules and procedures for the library.  Several important guidelines are being listed below:

           ·        Students cannot check out books without their student ID badge.

·        Students may have up to 2 books checked out at a time.

·        Books are checked out for a 2 week period, and they can be renewed.

·        If a book is overdue, another book cannot be checked out until the overdue book is returned.

·        Fines are not charged for overdue books, but students are required to pay for lost or damaged books.

AR Information

AR books are clearly marked on the spine of each book with the following information:

  • Yellow circular sticker indicates the book level
  • White label with red border indicates the number of points the test is worth

Reading teachers determine the book level range appropriate for their students.  They also establish the number of points required during a grading period.  If there are questions concerning the reading level of books, required points, and timelines, please contact the student's reading teacher.  A student must answer correctly 80% of the test questions in order to receive any points.  The tests are purchased from Renaissance Learning and are not written by district staff personnel.  In addition, this company determines the book level and test points for each title.

Online Databases

Katy ISD has purchased yearly subscriptions to excellent online databases for students and their family members to utilize.  All computers at KJH have access to these databases through the internet, and passwords are not needed for school use.

Usernames and/or passwords are required to access some of the databases from computers outside of KJH.  Flyers listing the databases, usernames, and passwords are available in the library, and they are distributed to students when needed.

These databases are excellent research tools!  In most cases, students will find appropriate, reliable, accurate, and current information by utilizing these educational databases as opposed to surfing the internet.

A Message to All Students:

Reading is a joy, a privilege, and the right of every student.

As you select the library book you will read, please understand that every book is not the best choice for every student.

If a book is unappealing or offensive to you in any way, please return it and select another.

You, the student, know better than we, the library staff, what reading materials best serve you and your standards and beliefs.
