Advanced Placement U. S. Government prepares students for the College Board AP U. S. Government examination given each May. Its scope is only national government. It is a college-preparatory course with a weighted grade point average.
Dual Credit U. S. and Texas Government is offered in conjunction with Houston Community College. Students need to enroll at the College in addition to registering for the course at Mayde Creek High School. The course covers various topics in both national and state and local government. Successful completion of the course with an average of C or higher creates a three-hour college credit in government that is automatically transferable to any public Texas university. Many other state and private universities also accept the credits.
Academic U. S. Government satisfies high school graduation requirements only. Its primary focus is national government with some attention to state and local. It provides a good background in the mechanics of government.
Humanities is an English Language Arts Department elective. It is an interdisciplinary course covering art, music, science, math, language and literature, economics and history. The topics follow a central theme, which is the French Revolution for the 2009-2010 academic year.
