2013-14 Required Immunizations
The following is a listing of changes in immunization rules that will affect all students entering Seventh through Eleventh Grade in the 2013-2014 school year:

Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap)
Beginning SY (school year) 2013-2014, Tdap is required for all students entering 7th grade if at least 5 years has elapsed since the last dose of a tetanus containing vaccine (DTaP/DPT/DT/Td). If 5 years have not elapsed since the last dose of a tetanus containing vaccine at entry into 7th grade, then this dose will become due as soon as the 5 year interval has passed. Td is acceptable if Tdap is medically contraindicated.

Meningococcal Vaccine
Beginning SY 2013-2014, one dose is required for all students entering 7th-11th grades.

Varicella vaccine (chickenpox)
Beginning SY 2013-2014, 2 doses are required with the first on or after the first birthday, and the second dose prior to entry into 7th-11th grades, unless a parent or physician statement of disease is on file.

It is possible that your child has already received the immunization and the information has not been provided to your campus nurse.

Free Children’s Immunizations provided on the following dates (April 15, May 20, June 17, July 15 and August 19).

GT Screening

GT Awareness Session:

Monday, November 26, 2012 at 7:00 pm

If you are interested in learning more about the Gifted and Talented Program or wish to determine whether it is something you should pursue for your child.

Meeting will be at the Educational Support Complex, 6301 South Stadium Lane in room 1200 just inside the Staff Development entrance.

General Screening for the Gifted and Talented Program in Katy ISD:

All interested students who have not already been screened this school year for the G/T program may pick up a Parent Checklist from the Counselors’ office beginning Monday, November 26.

At the secondary level, students are screened based upon specific subject matter aptitude in one or more content areas. In the screening phase of the identification process, multiple quantitative measures (standardized test scores) and qualitative measures (data gathered from parents and teachers) are examined. Students who meet district criteria for GT placement are eligible to participate in the subject area for which they qualify for the GT program. Screening is available for GT service in the areas of language arts, math, science, and social studies.

The Parent Checklist must be returned to the counseling office no later than 2:30 pm on Friday, January 11.  Please note that this is a firm deadline.

Once all the forms are in, previous test scores will be reviewed, and a testing schedule will go home with students who need to be tested.

You may also download the form from GT department’s page on the district website, www.katyisd.org.

Additional Screening for GT Students:

Students who are already in some GT classes, but wish to add other GT courses for next year should pick up a Request for Additional Screening form in the counseling office from November 26 through January 10.  You do not need a Parent Checklist.

The Request for Additional Screening forms are also due to the counseling office by 2:30 pm on Friday, January 11.

If you have questions about the Gifted and Talented Program,

please email kathrynalangford@katyisd.org

Student Drop-Off/Pick-Up Traffic Flow

With the changes in bus transportation availability, we are preparing for larger numbers of students who will walk or be dropped off by car.  In an effort to facilitate a smooth flow of traffic, a control gate has been installed.  This gate will be closed from 6:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and closed again at 2:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.  The front drive is the primary drop off and pick up zone for our campus.  This drive will be accessed by turning into the school complex off of Mason Road.  A map has been attached to this to show the pattern car riders will need to follow.

An alternative student drop off/pick up  zone will be established south of the school.  This zone is  for those who have transportation conflicts due to students attending both MRJH and MRHS. Please note the direction of approach that is illustrated on the attached map.  Students dropped off and picked up  in this alternative zone should be exiting and entering  from the passenger side of the car directly onto/from the grassy area.  Students are not allowed to cross through traffic.  Students who are dropped off at the alternative zone must walk and enter through the front of the building.
