About McRoberts Elementary
Our Mission
The Polly Ann McRoberts community is dedicated to facilitating academic excellence throughout our diverse learning population in a secure and nurturing environment.
About McRoberts
The students, faculty, staff, parents and community members at McRoberts form a partnership committed to embracing diversity and creating an environment where children are safe, nurtured, and empowered to reach their full potential as productive members of society. Students understand their responsibility in the learning process and go beyond the acquisition of basic skills to achieve a lifelong love of learning. Faculty and staff establish high expectations to motivate and challenge students while maintaining an atmosphere of respect, support and enthusiasm.
Good reading is an important part of the instructional program, supported by a home reading log program, “Caught You Reading,” “Drop Everything and Read” every morning, staff development in reading strategies, and a “buddy” program that pairs older and younger students in reading activities. Reading intervention programs provide assistance for students whose skills need improvement. Math skills get a boost through software, daily practice and assessment, innovative teaching strategies and before or after school assistance. Fifth graders are also given the opportunity to extend their learning during the Saturday Academy in the spring semester, where they are able toboost their skills in a fun and interactive way. McRoberts is home to one of the district’s elementary bilingual programs.
Student learning, good citizenship and leadership are celebrated by 3rd-5th graders at FAB Friday on a monthly basis. Individual students are nominated and honored with a dolphin when they exemplify "The Dolphin Way."
Each Tuesday, students take home a communication folder containing student work and community notices of interest to parents. Discipline charts are sent home daily to encourage timely discussion between children and parents concerning student behavior. A monthly calendar and newsletter are sent home at the beginning of each month furnishing additional school news. Parents have other opportunities to learn more throughout the school year at curriculum/orientation nights, parent support meetings, and special-area information meetings.
The staff and parents support a variety of programs that enrich student learning: visits by authors and Young Audiences of Houston, DARE (Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education), Leadership Training, safety programs and field day.
