 Fifth Grade Rocks!!!

Parents, we ask that you please assist your students by orally reviewing for tests the week before the tests. Students are provided with notes and graphic organizers in each subject spiral. At times there is difficult content material that students are responsible for and sometimes an oral review would be a great help!

Fifth graders need to continue practicing their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts and read, read, read!!! And don’t forget to study your spelling words throughout the week, but especially on Thursday night.

READING: The Reading Roundup Library Program is alive and well at Sundown. Reading classes are busy learning study skills and reading nonfiction. Also – we are working on TAKS formatted passages. One per week will be homework.

The focus for the next six weeks in fifth grade will be on the following topics and objectives: Working on nonfiction and study skills – practice these study skills at home – read nonfiction books from library at home.

MATH: In math we are working on number sentences, multiplication (students must know their facts 1-12’s), perimeter, area, volume, factors of numbers, rules of divisibility, and prime and composite numbers. When shopping at the grocery store, be sure to have students weigh that produce both in the standard and metric units of measure!! Mrs. Miller’s students are also using area to design their own floor plans for their own skating rinks.

SCIENCE: We have been studying electricity, energy and light. Students had the opportunity to work in several labs that deal with electricity where they worked with switches, flash lights, and electromagnets.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We have been learning about the major events that led to the American Revolution. Next we will learn why the colonists were able to defeat the British. We will also study the purposes of the US Constitution and the basic functions of the three branches of government. You are expected to continue practicing your map skills and memorizing the location of the 50 states on your own, as there will be pop quizzes throughout the rest of the school year. Feel free to use the US Map link on Mrs. Luongo’s Teacher Web at http://kisdwebs.katyisd.org/campuses/SE/teacherweb/luongom/Pages/UsefulLinks.aspx to help you practice and become a master geographer(!).

LANGUAGE: We just finished a unit on nouns; common and proper, singular and plural, and possessive nouns. Our next couple of units will focus on verbs; action verbs, linking verbs, main and helping verbs, and contractions with “not”. We have language homework due every Monday and Wednesday. If you accidently leave your packet at home, please visit Mrs. Luongo’s Teacher Web at http://kisdwebs.katyisd.org/campuses/SE/teacherweb/luongom/Pages/Welcome.aspx for a scanned copy of the packet.

Thank you to all fifth grade Safety Patrols, we appreciate all you do to help make our school a safer place to learn.

Thank you to fifth grade representatives on Student Council, we appreciate all you do to help our school and community.

Please be on the lookout for conference notes coming home. As always we continue to invite all fifth grade parents to keep in touch with us throughout this year; our conference times are from 8:35-9:25 AM. We ask that you please call to make an appointment and we’d be delighted to meet with you.

Sincerely,

The Fifth Grade Teachers
