Annoucements: Spartan Out Serving members who would like to participate in the Homecoming Parade can meet at the corner of  Fry and Gaston at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 2009, by swimming pool parking lot.  Please wear your SOS shirt if you have one. You may wear friendly circus related face paint, animal masks, a clown nose and hair/hat. Please email Mrs. Grimme @ traceygrimme@katyisd.org or stop by the library if you plan on participating in the parade.

Our next meeting is Thursday, November 5, 2009 in the PAC.  We will have a guest speaker for the Books Abroad Program.  Bring a new or slightly used book or money for the School supply Drive.

 Posted 10/20/2009 Rising Star Academy’s First Birthday Festival, located at 920 South Peak Road, Katy, TX needs volunteers on Saturday November 14, 2009.  They need help from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.(hours are flexible). Posted 11/6/2009 Fall Festival in Cinco Ranch - lots of volunteers needed!  The Cinco Ranch community will be having our annual fall festival, this year on Saturday afternoon, November 14, 2009, from noon until  4pm.  We will need volunteers to help with the event for set up, game stations, craft areas, face painting, animal areas, and more.   Volunteer opportunities start prior to the event through clean up.  Please contact Lori Curtis, special events volunteer chairperson at  LCurtis@newlandcommunities.com with any questions about the event and to sign up to volunteer.  The event will be held at Lake Pointe Park at the intersection of Cinco Ranch Blvd. and Rivergreen Park Lane in Cinco Ranch

Posted 9/21/2009 3rd Annual Wallis Independence Ride The Schlumberger Cycling Club, together with our ride partners, the ConocoPhillips Cycling Club and the Chevron Cycling Club, are hosting the 3rd Annual Independence Ride on Saturday, November 14 at the Wallis, Texas, Knights of Columbus Hall (703 Columbus Rd, Wallis, TX 77485). This ride supports disabled veterans through the Independence Fund. Volunteers are needed in various areas the day of the race.  Please contact Brenda Campbell for more information or to register to volunteer. A couple volunteers for 6:00am ( to direct the early arrivals) and half a dozen more by 7:00am. They will finish by 9:00am.  2) Cheering squad at the start line 8:00am til 9:00am. The more the merrier. 3) Cheering squad to welcome returning riders. First riders will arrive back as early as 10:30am. Last riders will arrive by 5:00pm 4) Potentially a few runners to help with equipment distribution 7:00am-8:00am 5) A couple of volunteers to help out at the Volunteer Check-in desk 6:00am-8:00am 6) Potentially some servers and helpers for the Knights of Columbus staff in serving the post ride meal

Posted 10/23/2009 Special Pals Food & Supply Drive. 3830 Greenhouse Road -- Houston, Texas. We will need two people per two hour shift, per day.  Shifts are 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. and 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Dates/Times:  Saturdays   Nov. 7th   -- Nov. 14th -- Dec. 5th --   Dec 12th Volunteers are needed to help with an animal food drive, duties will include, taking in collection of items from the public, putting it into storage and thanking the people, giving out stickers and color sheets to children and flyer's to families.  .  Posted 9/25/2009 31st Annual City Wide Club of Clubs Thanksgiving Feast  Thursday, November 26, 2009 (Thanksgiving Day) will take place at the George R. Brown Convention Center. 35,000 to 40,000 persons are expected to attend. Volunteers will be needed to help with setup and to serve the meals. Shift times are flexible and can be arranged for almost any time between 7:00am and 6:00pm. Volunteers are invited to partake in the meal. Teenagers are welcome.   Posted 11/5/2009 Bonnie Holland Elementary needs 20 volunteers for their annual Northern Lights Market & Breakfast with Santa event on December 5th from 8:00 a.m. to - 1:00 p.m.  This will be a fun event to earn service hours and food will be provided !!  We need students to work part of this event or all of the event – you choose.  Please contact Sandra Hibbler ( sshibbler@yahoo.com) with the times that you can help out.  Bonnie Holland LOVES S.O.S.  Posted 10/13/2009 The Grand Lakes Winter Festival will take place on Saturday, December 5th.  We need lots of volunteers from 12:30 pm to 5:00 pm for set-up, help during the event, and tear down.  During the event we need volunteers to help with the snow and the slide as well as to pose as elves with Santa, The event will take place at the SW town square (between Grand Parkway and Peek & Fry Westpark Tollway).  The street that surrounds it is called Cedar Meadow Circle. Please contact Bonnie Duhart at bduhart0325@gmail.com for more information or to register to volunteer.

Posted 10/23/2009 Christmas Carnival/Dance for the Association of Retarded Citizens of Katy on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at the YMCA Day Camp next to Creech Elementary on Mason Road.  Volunteers are needed to help with the set up 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., run the carnival booths 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and take down 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. SLHS Senior Analisa Valdivia is organizing this event for her Girl Scout Gold Award. Guideline Changes May 2009

·         Signatures are no longer required -- only the name and phone number of the person who is verifying the hours worked.  A parent cannot verify the hours.

·         Volunteer hours will not be accepted from immediate or extended family members. This includes working in the home or at the parent’s place of employment (or classroom), unless for a charity event.

·          No more than 12 hours per day may be counted.

·         Varsity players working JV games/events and vice-versa does not count towards SOS hours.

·         Folders should be neatly kept and well presented.  Only hours that have been documented and include verification names and phone numbers will be considered.

·          You may drop off your folder beginning the last Monday in March in the SLHS Library.

·         Folders are due by the end of the day on the first Friday in April.  Folders will be collected in the Rotunda before and after school on this day. 

Always Remember

·         From April 1, 2009 all service hours will count towards the 2009-2010 school year.  Check out the document “10 Great Summer Volunteer Ideas" for ways you can get started today!  Hours do not carry over from year to year.

·          Incoming Freshmen may start working on their hours beginning April 1, 2009.  Hours earned and recorded before becoming an SOS member are still countable as long as they fall in the April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010 time window.

·        Important reminder to all SOS volunteers:  When volunteering in the community you are to behave appropriately and responsibly.  You are representing Seven Lakes High School and are expected to

·         A maximum of 10 hours of volunteer service at SLHS are countable for underclass students. Seniors may count a maximum of 20 hours of volunteer service at SLHS. 

·         Seniors are required to complete journal entries for services performed.  Binders without journal entries will not be accepted for credit and service cords will not be awarded at graduation.  Be sure to include ALL hours served in your senior year in case there are questions about any of your hours.

·         Hours counted as a requirement or expectation for involvement in a student club, athletics or fine arts organization will not be accepted for credit.

·         Project Prom Events :  Seniors are welcomed and encouraged to volunteer however are not allowed to count these hours for SOS credit. Project Prom is fundraising for this senior class event and are not considered community service for senior students. Only underclassmen may earn SOS credit hours for these fundraising projects.
