About West Memorial Elementary

West Memorial's academic program focuses on giving each child opportunities to achieve educational success based on his/her individual abilities. WME's mission is "to be the best that we can be through our efforts as a team." An awesome team of students, parents, faculty and community joins together to ensure success for each student on our campus.

WME is proud of the parent and community involvement that we know to be an integral part of our school's success. Our students and teachers have received grants from ExxonMobil and DP, companies committed to supporting our math, science and technology programs. Parents are always welcome at WME, where they find an active, enthusiastic PTA organization.

A full-time nurse, counselor and librarian provide support services. In addition, we have a technology facilitator and art, music, physical education teachers to support student achievement. Students with special learning needs are accommodated through a variety of programs. Students who are identified as gifted and talented receive extended learning through our Challenge classes. There is a program for students who exhibit characteristics of dyslexia and for students who need additional reading support. Our special education program porvides services that range from self-contained programs to the inclusion model. Speech and language therapy services are also provided when warranted.

All grade levels enjoy Junior Achievement lessons throughout the year. Other enrichment activities available to students include: Destination ImagiNation competition, Accelerated Reader, Career Week, Skatetime and Field Days. Our fifth graders look forward each year to joining WME Safety Patrol, Science Club, Student Council, DARE, Honor Choir and Recorder Ensemble. Our fourth and fifth graders also participate in the district/state Spelling Bee competition. The book club is for third through fifth graders, and fourth and fifth grade students participate in the Art Club.

Each year we celebrate reading through our character book parade down Provincial Boulevard. The WMJH marching band provides the music and our students dress in different costumes depicting grade level character themes. This community event is enjoyed by all. WME also celebrates Dr. Seuss's birthday on March 2nd whith school-wide activities.
