"Volunteers are Superheroes"

More than 2,300 volunteers packed the Merrell Center to welcome former first lady, Mrs. Barbara Bush as guest speaker. Also in attendance were members of the United States Military who presented their colors, and allowed us to honor America's true heroes. Entertainment was provided by the Katy Elementary School Choir, McDonald Junior High Fiddlers, Katy High School musicians and Katy ISD Junior High School Choir Directors. Volunteers were greeted by high school students from across the district, and students from Miller Career Center worked in the arena. Volunteers of the Year were announced by the Janet Theis and Martha Brown from the Partners In Education office, which administers the VIPS program.

"Volunteerism is something near and dear to my heart," Mrs. Bush said. "People helping people is at the heart of the American spirit. All of you working together side by side, you are changing Katy."

The VIPS Executive Board also acknowledged retiring Katy ISD Superintendent, Dr. Leonard Merrell, by revealing that Katy ISD volunteers have donated 5,012,704  to Katy schools during his 12 years in the district.

 Heroes

My Hero is.....

  • my dad, because when he was a teenager his mom died. His dad couldn't take care of the three boys, so they were 'farmed out' among family members. As a result of his service to our country in WWll, he was able to be the first college graduate in his family. In his gentle way, he instilled in my brother, sister and me the importance of an education and the belief in ourselves. I tell both my mom and my dad that they did it right because even though we are scattered from Houston to Chicago, we can't wait to return to home and family to enjoy all twelve of us!!
  • Eleanor Roosevelt, because her loyalty and tireless efforts for her country in its time of need inspired millions of Americans to follow suit.
  • my father, because despite overwhelming odds (being a prisoner of war in WWll, and escaping from a German concentration camp) - he remains to this day an optimistic individual who looks for the best in any situation.
  • my mom, because she is such a great example of what my life should be like. She is always there for me and will give me a gentle push when I need it.
  • my older brother, because he has always been there for me, he never lets me down, and he makes me feel better when I am sad.
  • my dad, because he is in the Army and he risks his life to save ours. He is an MP in the Army.
  • R.C. my former Scout leader, because not only did he teach me numerous things, he is a man of honesty and integrity.
  • my third grade teacher, because he showed me that learning can be fun and exciting! He is part of the reason I became a teacher.
  • my childhood pastor, because what he said to me many, many years ago continues to strengthen and encourage me. He said "Remember the strongest trees grow out of solid rock." So when tough times come I know I'm getting stronger with each experience.
  • my stepmom, because she is incredibly brave. I watched her suffer through breast cancer and I never once saw her give up. She always had a smile on.
  • my big sister, because when I need help I go to her. When I'm in trouble she helps me get out of it. We could be fighting one second and hugging the next.
  • my mentor. She's been there for me when I needed someone to talk to, and I trust her for everything.
